Your choice
You can open the builder with this kit already loaded, then swap the cameras, pick a bigger drive or choose longer cables. It checks each change for you, so everything you end up with will work together.

This is a complete Hikvision coax CCTV kit: iDS-7204HQHI-M1/XT, a 4-channel AcuSense DVR with one HDD bay, with 4 3K Smart Hybrid Light ColorVu turret cameras and a 1TB hard drive already fitted. The cameras give you a choice of infrared or white light after dark, so one kit suits both a quiet side passage and a lit yard.
It records up to 3K/5MP Lite at 12 frames a second with H.265 Pro+ compression, takes HDTVI, AHD, CVI, CVBS and IP inputs, and can also connect up to 6 network cameras. These are 3K ColorVu turrets (2960 x 1665) with a fixed 2.8mm lens. Smart Hybrid Light gives you infrared up to 40m or white light up to 40m, and each camera has a built-in microphone sending audio over the coax cable. They are IP67 rated.
In the box: the recorder with the 1TB drive installed, 4 x 20m RG59 shotgun leads with BNC video and DC power ends, a 12V 3A power supply with a 4-way splitter and a 1.5m High Speed HDMI cable for your monitor. You provide a screen, and a network connection if you want to watch remotely.
To fit it, mount the four cameras, run each lead back to the recorder and plug the BNC ends into channels 1 to 4. Connect the power ends to the splitter and the monitor to the HDMI cable. One drive bay holds the 1TB drive; fit a larger one later if you want more days of footage.
Other sizes
The same recorder and cameras, packed for a different number of views.

In the box
Recording around the clock in H.265, that holds roughly 11 days of footage. Our sum allows 1 Mbps for each camera of 2MP or less, 2 Mbps for each one above that up to 5MP, and 4 Mbps for each one sharper than 5MP, added together when the cameras are not all the same model. Your own settings, how busy each view is and how much of the drive is usable all change the true number. With motion-only recording, it comes down to how often something moves in view.
Coax (HD analogue) system
Plugs into the coax cable already in your walls.
First, look over the box list: it names the power supplies, cables and mounting parts included. Then plan where each camera goes and how long each cable needs to be, because knowing how many cameras you have does not tell you what they will cover. At every spot, check what the lens can see, the lighting, and how exposed the camera will be to the weather.
