A ready-made kit, or your own choice of parts?

Every part in a ready-made kit is also sold on its own: the recorder, the cameras and the storage, matched and checked together. The kit costs the sum of those parts, and it is the simplest way to get the whole system in one go. Picking the parts yourself means the system can be shaped around your own place. You decide the lens, how long each cable is and which drive goes in, and any one part can be swapped later, which is how installers tend to work. The kit builder walks you through, a part at a time (in advanced mode you see every part on one page), and if you send us your list, we check it for you free of charge.

Kits with four cameras

Most homes are well covered by four cameras, watching the front door, the back, one side and the driveway. In a network kit, a 4-channel PoE NVR powers each camera down the one cable that also carries its picture. A 1–2TB surveillance drive keeps about a month of the footage it records when something moves.

Kits with eight cameras

Eight cameras suit a bigger home or a small business, so the doors, the till, the stock area and the yard can all be seen. Before you choose, look at the recorder’s PoE budget, which is how much power it can share between the cameras. With their infrared on at full power, eight cameras can need more than a small 8-port supply gives.

PoE kits, explained simply

Most new systems use PoE, short for Power over Ethernet. Each camera has its own Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and that one cable brings it power as well as sending back the picture. The plug on each end is an ordinary RJ45, and if you want another camera later, a patch lead connects it, so there is no electrician to call.
